Fuzzy Philosophy: Being Patient
Dear Cleo,
I often find myself losing patience with my kids, especially when they don't listen. Do you have any advice on how to become more patient?
Sincerely,
Frustrated Parent
Dear Frustrated Parent,
Patience is a virtue, much like a well-cooked bamboo shoot. It takes time and care to reach perfection. Here are my top tips for cultivating patience:
Practice Breathing: In moments of frustration, try counting to ten and taking deep breaths. If you get bored counting to ten, mix it up! Count to twenty or maybe even thirty. The trick is not to fall asleep while counting because then you might wake up and realize the kids have redecorated the walls with crayon art.
Embrace Distraction: When the kids are driving you up the bamboo, find something to distract yourself. I recommend a good book, a puzzle, or even knitting. I once tried knitting and ended up with a sweater that could only fit a baby giraffe. But hey, it kept me calm!
Channel Your Inner Panda: Pandas are known for their calm demeanor (except when there's no bamboo, but let's not go there). Imagine you are a panda in a peaceful bamboo forest. Visualize yourself munching on bamboo while the kids' chaos turns into soothing background noise. If that doesn’t work, try actual bamboo. It’s surprisingly chewy and might help!
Turn Patience into a Game: Make a game out of it with your kids. Challenge them to see who can be the quietest for the longest time. Winner gets a treat, and you get a few minutes of peace. Just be careful not to reward yourself with too many treats or you might end up needing a bigger couch.
Remember, patience isn’t about waiting; it’s about how you behave while you’re waiting. And sometimes, it’s about finding the humor in the chaos. If all else fails, just know that they’ll eventually grow up and you’ll miss these noisy, crazy moments.
Fuzzily yours,
Cleo
