Hats Off to Hollywood: City Lights

Image
Duke: Well, Rex, you finally did it. You got me to watch a romantic comedy. And not just any romantic comedy, but the one that’s supposed to be the best of the best— City Lights . An old black-and-white film from 1931, made by that fella with the little mustache, Charlie Chaplin.

Hats Off to Hollywood: Annie Hall

Image
Duke: Well, here we go again. This time, Rex dragged me into watching Annie Hall , number two on AFI's top 10 romantic comedies list. I’m not a fan of romantic comedies—or movies in general, as you know—but here I am, doing my civic duty for all you folks who might be wondering if this one’s worth your time.

Hats Off to Hollywood: It Happened One Night

Duke: Well, folks, I never thought I’d be spending my golden years watching romantic comedies, but here I am. This week, Rex and I took a gander at It Happened One Night , number three on AFI's top 10 romantic comedies list. Now, I don’t usually go in for these kinds of flicks, but I gotta admit, this one wasn’t half bad. It’s from way back in 1934, during the Great Depression. I reckon folks back then needed a good laugh, and this film sure delivered.

Hats Off to Hollywood: Roman Holiday

Image
Duke: Well, here we go again, folks. We’re diving into the world of romance with Roman Holiday . Ranked #4 on AFI's top 10 romantic comedies list, this one takes us to Rome, of all places, and follows a princess gal who decides she's fed up with royal life and runs off for a little adventure. I gotta say, back in my day, princesses knew their place—up in a tower somewhere, not gallivanting around Rome with a fella she just met!

Hats Off to Hollywood: The Philadelphia Story

Image
Duke: Well, Rex, I never thought I'd see the day when I'd sit through a romantic comedy. But here we are, tackling the American Film Institute's top 10 romantic comedies. Today’s pick was The Philadelphia Story . Made in 1940, it stars Katherine Hepburn, Cary Grant, and James Stewart. Now, I don’t know much about romance or comedy, but this film has a reputation. A lot of folks say it’s one of the best of its kind.

Hats Off to Hollywood: When Harry Met Sally...

Image
Duke: Well, well, well. Looks like Rex here has dragged me into another one of these so-called “classics.” This time, it’s When Harry Met Sally... , number six on AFI’s top 10 romantic comedies list. I thought I’d seen enough of this kind of mushy nonsense, but no, we’re diving right back into the deep end of the rom-com pool.

Hats Off to Hollywood: Adam's Rib

Image
Duke: Well, folks, this week Rex and I took a gander at another one of those so-called "classic" movies, Adam's Rib . It's number seven on the AFI's top 10 romantic comedies list. It's a film from 1949 starring Spencer Tracy and Katharine Hepburn, two big-shot actors back in the day. Now, I don't know much about romantic comedies, but I do know this: when you mix romance with comedy, you're asking for trouble. And boy did this movie deliver on that front.
